Fueling Your Winter Workouts

  • By Chris Carmichael
  • Published 4 hours ago
Photo: Shutterstock.com

Stay lean this winter to be faster next year.

Let?s face it?the stretch from Halloween through New Year?s is a minefield of dietary indiscretions. It?s hard to avoid packing on a few extra pounds with everyone shoving high-sugar, high-fat foods in your face. And to make matters worse, most triathletes significantly decrease their training volume in these same months?what I call the ?soft season,? the exercise space that falls between full-fledged training and being a couch potato.

It?s during this season that our coaches often scale back their triathletes? training sessions to one workout per day, with a goal of two to three sessions per sport per week. In most cases, especially for time-crunched athletes and those not preparing for iron-distance goals, weekday workouts run about 45?90 minutes with longer sessions on the weekends.

With the overall reduction in energy expenditure and shorter workouts, you can help thwart gradual weight gain by following this easy tip: Don?t take in any calories during workouts lasting up to 75 minutes. You start these workouts with enough stored carbohydrate energy (glycogen) to achieve high-quality training efforts. At easy-to-moderate intensities, this no-extra-fuel window can even stretch to 90 minutes.

Carbohydrates from sports drinks or energy gels during longer workouts and races are necessary because you?re doing what you can to make your muscle glycogen stores last longer. During shorter (60?75-minute) workouts?even a really hard interval session?you?re not going to burn through all of your glycogen stores. And what you did burn you will completely replenish within 24 hours through post-workout nutrition and your normal diet. When your training frequency was higher, it may have been harder to fully replenish glycogen stores between workouts, but that?s less of a concern during the soft season.

What?s more, you?re not likely to reduce your out-of-training consumption to compensate for what you consumed during short workouts. So, if you don?t really need it during training and won?t account for that energy later in the day, all it?s doing is increasing your total caloric intake for the day and not improving your performance.

Don?t get me wrong: You still need to take in fluids to help manage core temperature. I really like low-calorie, electrolyte-rich drinks for hydration during short workouts. Effervescent tabs such as Gu Brew Electrolyte Tablets provide electrolytes and flavor?both driving factors for increasing fluid consumption during exercise.

In this type of nutrition approach, you?re relying on high-quality foods before and after shorter workouts to provide the energy for training and adaptation. Some of the most frequent questions I get are about adjusting nutrition for workouts at various times of day. At the bottom of this article, I?ve laid out a simple strategy for morning, mid-afternoon or evening workouts.

This may not completely eliminate all weight gain between Halloween and New Year?s. After all, the 1,000-calorie pumpkin spice latte you slurped up in the afternoon is more of a problem than the 150 calories you might have consumed during your workout. Don?t obsess over it; just keep an eye on it. Weight fluctuations by a few pounds are normal and healthy for athletes. What you want to avoid is packing on more than 5 pounds from the end of your competition season to the end of your soft season. Minimize the weight you gain now, and you?ll have less work to do getting to optimal race weight in 2013!

Morning workout

Before: 1 bottle of water right when you get up. Have a small (100?200-calorie) snack to regulate blood sugar, and maybe a small cup of coffee if you need some caffeine to adequately focus.

During: 1 water bottle of a low-calorie electrolyte drink.

Recovery: At least 24 ounces of water and a high-quality breakfast. If you?re short on time, a recovery drink and a smaller, on-the-go breakfast is a good compromise.

Mid-day workout

Before: 1 bottle of water throughout the morning. Low-glycemic index bar, such as a PR Bar, within an hour before your workout.

During: 1?2 water bottles of low-calorie electrolyte drink and/or water.

Recovery: At least 24 ounces of water immediately after. High-quality lunch within 30?45 minutes.

Evening workout

Before: 24-ounce bottle of water in the hour before workout; many athletes gradually become more dehydrated as the day goes on. 150?200-calorie snack about 30?60 minutes before your workout.

During: 1?2 bottles of low-calorie electrolyte drink and/or water.

Recovery: High-quality dinner within 60 minutes of the end of your workout. Drink at least 24 ounces of water before or with dinner.

Search Engine Optimization Tips To Rank You At The Top

You can divide the SEO process into different tasks, doing some yourself based on your capabilities, and contracting some tasks out to companies that can provide the services that you aren?t comfortable handling. The following advice will get you started.

You will give your SEO a good boost if you link to good external content when you can. This is by far an extremely vital part of linking. Search engines give more weight to off-site links that are relevant, than to internal links connecting various pages of your website. Linking options that let you correspondingly link to yourself, like link exchanges, will also increase your rank.

When you blog through your own site, it increases your search engine visibility. As a result, more visitors will come to look at your site.

Get more website visitors through web searches. Making your site spider friendly will increase your search engine raking. Search engine spiders only search text, so it is key to use tags on all graphic elements in your site. Keywords are crucial in describing your content.

When trying to enhance your site?s search engine optimization, be patient. Huge amounts of traffic and major changes will not happen in one night. If you have new site, the process can take up to several months. Online business is no different from offline business. Either way, it is going to take time to build your brand.

Visitors need to visit and remain on your site in order for the PageRank algorithm to boost your ranking. It seems the length of time someone remains on a website (according to site metric scores such as Quantcast, etc.) alters the page rank for the better. Do every thing you can to keep visitors engaged. A forum, for instance, is a good way to keep people on your site longer.

To raise your search engine rankings, keeping your content unique should be at the top of your list. Interesting, original content ranks higher on search engines because it attracts more traffic. High-quality, unique content not only draws more traffic to your website, it is also more likely to turn a first-time visitor into a repeat visitor.

The world of podcasts is also something you should consider. Podcasts can be audio or video and sometimes live. Include important and relevant information to make sure your audience is happy with your show! Podcasts are becoming very popular with both users and webmasters. You simply need to grab a web cam and microphone, and start recording. Your podcast descriptions will begin to list in search engines.

Websites with meaningful content often rank higher than those that just sell products and services. Try to provide some tips or articles about the items you are selling.

Include a site map to optimize your search results. Your site will be much easier for the spiders to crawl if you include a site map. Larger sites should have several maps. A good rule to go by is to show only 100 links maximum on any given site map.

Assist the web spiders in their mission if you expect to be ranked highly. Spiders are constantly crawling through your content and pulling your site up based on things like keywords, but they have to know how to navigate your site. You have to stress the important areas of your site by making a site map which lets a web spider get a hold of the hierarchy of your pages.

Search engine optimization, or SEO for short, is a type of marketing that can boost your business to the next level. Use keywords that best describe your product or service. This will bring the interested visitors to your site and raise your rankings with those little robots that weave through the Internet. This is the best way to bring people to your site.

The language meta tag is crucial to your search ranking if your site is written in a language besides English. You will raise your search engine rankings for that language by using this feature.

Use the tips offered here as a stepping stone to higher site rankings and great success for your business. You want the highest rankings possible, and that can only happen with solid, effective SEO practices.

Captive animals show signs of boredom, study finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2012) ? Wondering if your caged hamster gets bored? It's highly likely if the critter has nothing to do all day.

Those are the findings of University of Guelph researchers in the first research study to empirically demonstrate boredom in confined animals. The study appears today in PLOS ONE, published by the Public Library of Science.

The study's authors hope the results encourage the development of better housing systems for captive animals.

"Ideas about how to assess animal boredom scientifically have been raised before, but this is really the first time that anyone's done it," said Rebecca Meagher, a U of G postdoctoral researcher and the study's lead author.

It's well-established that living in unchanging, inescapable environments induces boredom in humans, including prisoners who report that they are highly motivated to seek stimulation.

"But we cannot rely on verbal self-reports from non-humans, so motivation to obtain general stimulation must form the basis of any objective measure of boredom in animals," said Prof. Georgia Mason, who holds the Canada Research Chair in animal welfare in Guelph's Department of Animal and Poultry Science.

The researchers presented captive mink with stimuli ranging from appealing treats to neutral objects to undesirable things, such as leather gloves used to catch the animals.

Half of the animals in the study lived in small, bare cages. The other half lived in large "enriched" cages that were enhanced with water for wading, passageways for running, objects to chew and towers to climb.

The researchers found that animals in confined, empty spaces avidly seek stimulation, which is consistent with boredom. Those mink approached stimuli -- even normally frightening objects -- three times more quickly and investigated them for longer. These animals also ate more treats, even when given as much food as mink in enriched environments.

When they were not being tested, mink in empty cages spent much of their waking time lying down and idle. Among them, those that spent the most time awake but motionless showed the keenest interest in stimuli.

"We don't know whether mink or other animals truly feel bored in the same way that humans do," Meagher said. "We can't measure that type of subjective experience. But we can see that, when they have little to do, then just like many bored humans, they may look listless, and, if given the chance, eagerly seek any form of stimulation."

Guelph neuroscientist and psychology professor Mark Fenske, an expert in human cognition and emotion and recent co-author of a comprehensive review of boredom research, said the study is an important addition to the literature.

"Surprisingly little is known about boredom, even though it is associated with significant adverse consequences for health and well-being," he said.

"Being able to now study boredom in non-human animals is an important step in our efforts to understand its causes and effects and find ways to alleviate boredom-related problems across species."

Meagher and Mason hope the findings will prompt further research, including looking at whether intelligent animals such as primates and parrots are particularly prone to boredom in captivity, and why under-stimulation causes problems.

The research was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Guelph's Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare, where Mason is an associated faculty member.

[Event] The Digital Broadband Migration: The Future of Internet ...

Agenda

?

The future of Internet-driven innovation remains a difficult topic to assess. Some trends, including the increasing importance of wireless platforms, are not hard to spot, but many of the game-changing technologies and trends are likely to surprise us. We do know that the dynamics around competition and innovation in the Internet space will raise a series of policy, business, and technical issues that will challenge the ability of 20th century institutions to keep up.

?

In this conference, we will look ahead at innovation in the Internet environment, taking a hard look at three policy dimensions that are getting increasing attention. First, we will examine the forces and strategies around how to enable interoperability and interconnection in the Internet Protocol-based environment. This examination will ask how issues traditionally addressed by telecommunications regulation-the physical connection of networks and the oversight of voice communications will be handled in a world where some of the most important network connections (say, Internet backbone networks) and voice interoperability (say between Voice over IP providers) are outside the scope of today's regulatory regime.

?

Second, we will discuss the emerging competitive forces, battles, and policy responses in the Internet space, evaluating the role not only of traditional competition policy on the part of antitrust authorities and telecommunications regulation, but also the role of intellectual property rights. Finally, we will evaluate how and whether wireless communications will facilitate innovation and competition in a wireless broadband environment where the opportunities for access to spectrum, both licensed and unlicensed, are far from determined.

Croatia opens health fraud probe against 76 people

(AP) ? Investigators in Croatia have formally opened a probe against 76 people ? including doctors and the management of a local pharmaceutical company ? as part of an anti-corruption sweep.

The Balkan nation is required to fight corruption before it joins the European Union next year as the bloc's 28th state.

The anti-graft police said Wednesday that nine people will be kept in detention during the investigation into allegations that the local pharmaceutical firm Farmal had bribed doctors into using its products.

Police say Farmal gave money and gifts or organized trips for the doctors over the past three years in return for them prescribing its medicines. The group being investigated includes 49 doctors, a pharmacist and 26 pharmaceutical company employees.
