desert and sub-tropical regions - Computers, Math, Science, and ...

The Sahara does have Oasis.

Both natural, and manmade, irragation can create a garden spot in the middle of a desert in which you can almost have one foot in each vegation zone.

So I would say it can happen. Camel caravans depend on it actually.

The opposite- a pocket of desert in a wet zone happens too. You can have a rain shadow caused by mountains blocking the prevailing winds and forcing rain to fall before it reaches the valley on the lee side. Thus making the valley a desert ( its common in the state of Washington). But you couldnt do that within one quarter of a mile. The mountains have to be thousands of feet high and miles broad for that to work.

So you can have oasis in the middle of a desert in that small a space. But you cant quite make a pocket of desert happen in a larger forest in that small a space.

Affiliate marketing is essential when developing your business. You just cannot avoid it. Your company could rise or fall based solely on your whether you have implemented a sound Internet promotion strategy. If you want to embrace Internet market to help enhance your business, read on.

Consider implementing mobile marketing in your business. Reaching out to your customers while they are away from their computers can really help boost your sales. It is an innovative way to reach a broader audience, while they are on the go.

If you really want to give your customers something fun and interactive, try adding a forum or chat room to your site. People will identify with your brand if they can discuss things they enjoy with people who have similar interests. A forum gives you the opportunity to learn from your customers while allowing users to make important business contacts.

TIP! Successful internet marketing should include video uploads that have the potential to go viral. Make sure to link to your site in the video description.

Allow customers to post reviews on your site. Customer reviews can be very influential to prospective customers.

Test your emails; learn what works and does not work to get action out of your customers. A/B testing is often used. Build an email, then change one critical item to create a variation. For instance, you can vary the subject lines, intro paragraphs or calls to action. Send out the different versions to groups of your customers and see which version is more successful. Use the one that is most successful for the rest of your email marketing campaign.

Learn about your competition. You can check your competition?s site to see what they have. Your goal is to create a better site that people will check instead of your competitors?.

TIP! If you want to be successful at Internet marketing, you need to be listed on Google. Google is used by millions of people every day, so your company needs to be listed if you want to know exactly who is searching for you.

Establishing yourself as an authority in your field can gain a great deal of respect for your business. Let people know you are the top dog. Go with describing your position as the President or the CEO.

Many businesses have a place on their website called a ?squeeze page.? This is basically a gateway that solicits website visitors for their email addresses before they continue. It?s always good to offer something of value (e.g. a free promotional item) when you ask visitors for contact information. Then they will receive something useful, and you can put them on your email list.

Give extra benefits to customers who promptly take advantage of a special offer. That could be free shipping for the first hundred people who place an order or free gift wrapping for customers who order before a certain time. In order to make this offer as compelling as possible, emphasize exactly when it will expire.

TIP! As an Internet marketer, you want to become an expert on everything to do with your site. This will give you credibility and a good reputation.

Secure the system you use to accept payments. Opening a Paypal account or using some similar service which allows for safe transactions is a good idea. Another idea is to allow your customers to have password protected accounts prior to ordering.

To attract more customers to your site, create a game. Customers are constantly looking for online games and adding a simple one can keep them coming back. Use the game to subtly advertise your products for services. For instance, if you sell lawn treatment products, you might create a game which requires the use of your products in order to achieve the greenest, healthiest lawn.

If you are interested in having a trusted site, write a FAQ. In many cases, a good FAQ can head off a visitor?s problems before they become too frustrating and keep them satisfied with your website. Customers are much more likely to buy from a business that addresses their informational needs and questions, and not just a product.

TIP! The Google PageRank of your website could be boosted by administering a temporary promotional campaign. If the deal is good enough, you can ?buy? PageRank because consumer news and deals sites will link to yours.

Remember that your customers deserve an online experience as customer friendly as the service you provide them in-store. Take the time to frequently visit your website as a visitor and check for broken links, outdated information and other potential problems. No one wants to shop at a business that is poorly tended, looks outdated and doesn?t put much effort into their appearance.

Consider doing your own email marketing. Once you understand how the process works, it becomes simple to use bulk mailing lists, auto responders and mass mailers. At the end of the day, the hands-on experience you?ll pick up is truly invaluable. What you learn today will help you indefinitely.

Review your business website from the perspective of a customer. Does it offer ease of use? Is it engaging to read? Can orders be placed with clarity and in a short amount of time? It is a waste of time and effort to strive to bring new visitors to your site if your website is uninteresting or the layout is confusing. Potential customers can be turned off by these types of sites, and this can result in lost sales.

TIP! It can be a difficult job to choose your business direction for your website. To start off, you need to narrow down all of your interests until you find the one you enjoy the most.

Look for distinctive, memorable ways to dole out prizes. Have your customers find hidden words in your article. Offer prizes and discounts for those that find them. The interaction with your customers will make them have fun, and they will be more apt to purchase something from you.

When it comes to Affiliate marketing, it is important to watch what your competition is doing. Every business has its competitors, and you need to be aware of yours.

Include your signature in all of your emails, regardless if they are business-related or not. Since your signature is essentially your cyber business card, you need to hand it out at every opportunity. Letting those who receive your correspondence get a glimpse of your business is a great way to recruit new visitors to your website and generate even greater profits.

TIP! Video marketing is an excellent way to promote your products. The addition of a short video to your site can really work well to attract the customer?s interest in what you are offering.

Some people assume Web marketing is unnecessary, but it needs to be a vital part of any company that wants to continue succeeding. It cannot be avoided or ignored by anyone who does business online. For Internet success that you can be proud of, try some of the powerful tips in the article above and get a bigger bottom line.

Google Admits It Was Blocking WP8 Maps - Business Insider

Google has backtracked. It now admits it's been blocking Windows Phone 8 users from accessing Google Maps.

Instead of maps, Windows Phone users were being sent to Google.com.

Google says it's changed its mind and will stop blocking them.

This was a strange controversy.

To recap: Yesterday a flap broke out when several tech sites reported that Windows phone users could no longer access Google Maps. Google offered a technical explanation for the problem, basically saying that the default browser in Windows 8 phones, Internet Explorer, was technically incapable of rendering Google Maps, reported Alex Wilhelm on The Next Web.

But Microsoft quickly pointed out that such an explanation couldn't be true, as Microsoft uses the same rendering engine in the version of IE used in Windows Phone 8 as the one in Windows 8.? And the PC's browser has no trouble accessing Google Maps.

So today, Google was forced to backtrack and admit that it was choosing to block Maps access from Windows phone for other reasons, namely that it didn't think that Internet Explorer was good enough. It sent a new statement to TNW's Wilhelm today that said in part:

"In our last test, IE mobile still did not offer a good maps experience with no ability to pan or zoom and perform basic map functionality. As a result, we chose to continue to redirect IE mobile users to Google.com where they could at least make local searches. The Firefox mobile browser did offer a somewhat better user experience and that?s why there is no redirect for those users."

It then said that IE has since improved and promised to stop blocking Windows 8.

The Maps flap was an odd conclusion to a week of epic battle between the two rivals. Earlier this week, Google won a big one over Microsoft when the FCC decided that Google did not need to change its search engine business practices much.

And Microsoft won one over Google when the FCC also told Google it couldn't extort huge sums of money from Microsoft and others for some of its patents.

Doomsday and Hereafter

I think all religions talk about the doomsday and the hereafter. Only those who do not have religions do not believe in both the doomsday and the hereafter. In my religion, Islam, both the doomsday and the hereafter should be believed in by Muslims. Otherwise, their good deeds will not help them in the hereafter. We, Muslims, believe that there will be only two places in the hereafter?Heaven and Hell. According to the Holy Quran, Article 7 (The Elevated Places), verse 25, God says, ?Therein shall you live, and therein shall you die, and from it shall you be raised.? This verse is related to the previous verse that says, ?He said: Get forth, some of you, the enemies of others, and there is for you in the earth an abode and a provision for a time.? Based on these two verses in the Holy Book, the author of the book entitled ?Ternyata Akhirat Tidak Kekal? (meaning ?the hereafter is not eternal?) has drawn a conclusion that the hereafter will still be in the same planet?the planet we are now in.

According to him, possibly based on his knowledge of astronomy and information on the Holy Book of Quran, as well as the theory of Big Bang, the doomsday will happen in the next three thousand year. The dooms day will occur not because of the wars or all planets in the universe colliding one another. The doomsday will happen because our planet, still in its path, will enter meteor-filled cloud. Because of this, the planet will be attacked by millions or even more of meteors in different sizes. The huge meteors break apart as they penetrate through the atmosphere. Some parts of the meteors are torn apart into dusts, and the other parts going down toward the earth. All living things will be destroyed, and all human beings, as described in the Holy Quran, will be thrown up into the sky as a result of the meteors hitting the surface of the earth.

Agus Mustofa, the author of the book, also explained in his book that the earth will need about three billion years to be recovered and ready to allow the next phase of living. All human beings will be raised; each will be alive in different physical conditions. In this hereafter, the real judgment day will start. All human beings after judged by God shall become two groups?right group and left group. The right group will enter Heaven, and the left will live permanently in Hell. In Article 11, verses 107-108 of the Holy Quran, the two groups will live there so long as the heavens and the earth endure.

Rig accident shows danger of Arctic drilling - Green groups

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Opponents of Royal Dutch Shell's ambitious Arctic oil program have called on the Obama administration to put offshore drilling plans in the region on hold after one of the company's oil rigs broke away from tow boats in high seas and ran aground off Alaska.

The Natural Resources Defense Council and The Wilderness Society on Thursday said the accident involving Shell's Kulluk oil rig is new evidence that oil companies are not prepared to safely manage the extreme conditions of the Arctic.

The 30-year-old Kulluk rig ran aground on New Year's Eve in what were described as "near hurricane" conditions while it was being towed south for the winter.

"This string of mishaps by Shell makes it crystal clear that we are not ready to drill in the Arctic," Chuck Clusen, NRDC's director of Alaska projects, told reporters in a teleconference.

The green groups said they plan to send a letter to the Department of the Interior demanding that it stop issuing permits in the Arctic and that it prevent drilling in the sensitive area until it is determined that the environment can be fully protected.

Ocean conservation group Oceana also called on the department to stop oil drilling activities in the Arctic after the Kulluk's grounding.

Shell has spent $4.5 billion since 2005 to develop the Arctic's vast oil reserves, but the company has faced intense opposition from environmentalists and native groups as well as regulatory and technical hurdles.

The company has yet to complete a single well and gave up on plans to explore for oil last year after its required oil spill containment system was damaged during tests.

Shell stressed the incident with Kulluk was a "marine transit issue" that did not involve actual drilling.

"It is possible to drill safely offshore Alaska, as our 2012 record shows," Shell spokeswoman Kelly op de Weegh said in a statement.

Shell was allowed to perform some preparatory drilling in the Arctic last year.

The company said it takes the Kulluk incident seriously and is participating in a probe of the incident with the Coast Guard and other companies involved.

Even without government action, the grounding of the Kulluk could threaten Shell's 2013 drilling timetable because its oil-spill plans require a second rig to be available at all times in case a relief well needs to be drilled to kill a well.

The Discoverer, owned by Noble Corp, is Shell's other Alaska rig. The Kulluk, while owned by Shell, is operated by Noble.

While Shell has made the most progress toward exploring offshore Alaska for oil, ConocoPhillips also has significant holdings in the Chukchi Sea.

ConocoPhillips paid more than $500 million in 2008 for leases in the area and has said it plans to drill an exploration well in the Chukchi in 2014 or later.

Massachusetts Congressman Edward Markey, the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources committee, also voiced concerns about Shell's fitness to operate in the Arctic.

"This is just the most recent incident in Shell's attempt to drill offshore in the Arctic and it raises serious questions about the company's ability to conduct these operations safely and in a way that protects the environment," Markey, an outspoken critic of oil and gas companies, said in a letter to Shell.

Markey asked the company to provide him with any plans it has developed to deal with severe weather in the region and for information about how the company plans to prevent similar accidents in the future.

First-day play washed out at PGA Tour opener

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) ? The PGA Tour season now starts on Saturday.

Wind squalls that howled down off the mountains above Maui were so severe Friday that tour officials scrapped the first round of the Tournament of Champions. All scores were erased ? only 20 players in the 30-man field even had scores on their cards ? and the round will start over Saturday with 36 holes, weather permitting.

"I can honestly say the forecast isn't real good, but maybe we'll get lucky," said Slugger White, the tour's vice president of rules and competition. "That's the hope."

Rickie Fowler and Jason Dufner, who supposedly started the 2013 season by playing in the first group, only made it through eight holes. Six players, including defending champion Steve Stricker, had not even teed off.

It was the first time since The Players Championship in 2005 that a round had been wiped clean.

The decision was great news for Scott Stallings, who made a quadruple-bogey 8 on the third hole and already was 7-over par after four holes. He will tee off as if none of that ever happened. As for U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson?

"It stinks for me," Simpson said.

With a conversative game plan and a few good putts, Simpson was 3 under par after seven holes when play was stopped. Jonas Blixt of Sweden at 1 under was the only player surviving par.

So much for starting the season in paradise.

This felt more like work than a working vacation, and the 40 mph gusts became too much when Carl Pettersson lagged a 40-foot putt that was slowing around the hole until a gust came up and blew it another 30 feet and just off the green. Hunter Mahan went to address a putt and ball blew a few feet forward. Ian Poulter said he used his umbrella to shield the wind so he could mark his ball on the green, but when the umbrella moved, so did his golf ball.

"You couldn't identify the best players out here," Pettersson said.

The plan was to play 36 holes Saturday, although the forecast was not much better ? occasional bursts of rain and big gusts. The Plantation Course at Kapalua was built on a mountain, and it's one of the toughest courses to walk all year. It figures to be a brutal day for the caddies.

"I'm not sure how I'm going to feel," Pettersson said.

Bubba Watson, who had yet to tee off, said it looked like "goofy golf" from what he saw on television. FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker was on the practice range and told of an 8-iron that only went about 50 yards. "I could have caught it if I ran fast enough," he said.

Those were the kind of shots that counted on the golf course.

Players were averaging about 350 yards off the tee on the first hole, with the trade wind at their backs. On the third hole, dead into the wind, no one hit a drive longer than 248 yards except for Stallings ? his went 265 yards, only because it hit a cart path and disappeared into the native grass and was never found.

Fowler hit a driver and a 5-iron on the third hole. It's usually a wedge.

"Numbers were kind of irrelevant at times," Fowler said, referring to yardages.

That happens all the time in golf, especially on links courses. The problem, however, was on the putting greens.

The wind was howling at sunrise and never relented, so everyone was playing in the same conditions. And there were times the wind laid down. Simpson was thinking of laying up on the par-5 fifth hole when the rain and wind subsided, and he switched to a fairway metal and reached the green.

Why even start at all under conditions so severe for this golf course?

"We aren't really looking for these gusts up to 40 mph," White said. "We had gusts up to 42 mph. I don't think you can just not try to play."

Kuchar was on the eighth tee when play was stopped. He stood over his 4-iron, then back off. He got back into position to play, and then backed off again. "It just felt too funny to pull the trigger," he said.

Players originally were told to stay on the course to see if conditions would improve, and before long, they were brought back to the clubhouse. About an hour later, White met with them in the dining room to tell them the day was over.

"Obviously, I was thrilled," Stallings said. "It was just really bad. I hit bad shots and got bad breaks. I'd like to know how Webb Simpson was 3 under."

He might not have been for long. His final tee shot on the par-3 eighth came up well short of the green, and it was not clear if it went into the gorge. Even though seven holes of remarkable golf no longer counts, Simpson managed to find one positive aspect to the day.

"I got off to a great start, but that's the way it goes. I'm sure they made the decision that's best for all the guys," he said. "But the good news is, I had a good start and I'm playing well. We're just trying to keep the ball in play and in front of us and I was able to make a couple of putts. And that's what you have to do on a day like today."
