Ask Engadget: best earbuds for fitness use?

Ask Engadget

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Brandon, who needs some earbuds that won't leave his head when he's on the treadmill. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I've been having issues at the gym with my headphones coming out of my ears. As of now, I'm using a basic pair of Sony sport headphones, but is there a pair of moderately priced ear-buds that do the trick of actually staying in your ear while running?"

Last time we asked, you were divided between those who prized robustness (and a low price) and audiophiles who couldn't bear to listen to inferior gear.
If you're in the former camp:

If you're in the latter camp:

Still, that was then and this is now, so let's turn the question over to you once more to see if we can smash our heads together and get some knowledge to fall out.

AutoMatters: 2012 LA Auto Show - Del Mar Times

By Jan Wagner

The 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, in the LA Convention Center, presents an excellent opportunity for you to see, experience and compare the latest automobiles from around the world, in one place and without any sales pressure.

This year?s show brought to mind the great LA Auto Shows from years past. The excitement returned, with creative, interactive exhibits and entertainment ranging from high-energy dancers at the VW exhibit to the USC Marching Band over at the Mitsubishi Press conference.

The variety of fuel-efficient vehicles and powertrains on display had never been greater. Included were high mileage gas vehicles ? some offering stop/start technology for additional fuel savings, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, clean diesels, natural gas vehicles and all-electrics. There was even a diesel race engine, from Mazda.

When choosing one of these types of fuel-efficient vehicles, it is not a matter of one size fits all. You should give serious consideration to the kind of driving you usually do. For example, if your driving consists mostly of short trips around town, then an all-electric vehicle might be the perfect choice for you. However, if you do a lot of out-of-town driving, as I do when covering events for AutoMatters, then you probably will want to get an efficient gas vehicle or a plug-in hybrid, since those can quickly and easily be refueled at the pump.

The new Ford Fusion won the Green Car of the Year Award, but I was especially interested in the new Ford C-MAX Energi ? a plug-in hybrid with loads of room, combined with incredible fuel economy and state-of-the-art, on-board electronics. Yes, green cars are going to get better and better, but it?s like with computers ? if you?re not in the game, at some point you?ll probably want to get off of the sidelines and buy something. I went from driving an aging compact station wagon that got fuel mileage in the mid-20s to a new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, that gets over 50 MPG consistently. That really helps with the transportation budget and it makes going to the Magic Kingdom (Disneyland and California Adventure) a much, much easier decision.

FIAT continues to be on a roll, adding a Cabriolet to their performance leader, the 500 Abarth. It was one of nearly 50 debuts at the LA Auto Show.

Porsche announced the world premiere of a beautiful new Cayman sportscar. In keeping with Porsche tradition, this car looks, at first glance, pretty much like its predecessor, but looks can be deceiving. This Cayman is longer, lower, lighter, faster, more efficient and more powerful.

Bentley presented several drop-dead gorgeous cars, including the Bentley Continental GT3 racecar and the ultra-luxurious Bentley Mulsanne.

Jaguar had a really cool, interactive, high-tech exhibit where you could open the doors, drop the top, check out the trunk space and even start the engine of a virtual new Jaguar, all by using hand gestures.

Downstairs in Kentia Hall, along with many customized vehicles, were vendors offering automotive accessories, car care products and gadgets for sale.

At the end of a day at the auto show, great nightlife is within easy walking distance of the LA Convention Center. Right next-door is the Staples Center. Also nearby is the popular ?LA Live? entertainment complex, with restaurants, clubs and even a seasonal, outdoor ice rink.

After the first of the two auto show Press days, I attended the open house for the new Honda R&D Americas, where I initiated a fascinating, lively discussion with a young Honda designer. I began by asking him why we have been stuck with wheeled vehicles for so long, when the technology surely exists to develop other, better means of transportation (perhaps think along the lines of ?Beam me up, Scotty!?). He welcomed my challenge, assuring me that at Honda they are, indeed, thinking way out of the box and are working on developing exciting new concepts for how we might get around well into the future. I can?t wait to see what they come up with.

The next road trip for AutoMatters will take me to the Progressive International Motorcycle Show at the Long Beach Convention Center.

Locally, mark your calendar for Dec. 27 ? 30. That is when the San Diego International Auto Show will be returning to the San Diego Convention Center. It?s always a great show, with plenty to see and do, and opportunities to drive. For complete information, visit http://www.sdautoshow.com.

That?s it for this installment of AutoMatters. I?d like to hear from you, so please send me an email with your questions and suggestions. My email address is AutoMatters@gmail.com.

Generic drugs often have incorrect safety labeling, study suggests

Dec. 13, 2012 ? Despite U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations requiring generic medications to carry identical warnings to those on corresponding brand-name products, a study by Regenstrief Institute researchers has found that more than two-thirds of generic drugs have safety-warning labels that differ from the equivalent brand-name drug.

The investigators reviewed 9,105 product labels for over 1,500 drugs available on DailyMed, an online repository of labeling information maintained by the FDA and the National Library of Medicine. Of the 1,040 drugs with more than one manufacturer's label, 68 percent showed some discrepancies within their safety information.

The majority of generics showed relatively small differences across their labels, but nine percent showed differences of more than 10 side effects. Errors included out-of-date information, incomplete data and, in one case, information for the wrong drug altogether.

"Physicians frequently use labeling information, either directly or indirectly, to make prescribing decisions. They need to know about side effects, drug interactions and other safety issues," said Regenstrief Institute investigator Jon Duke, M.D., M.S., assistant professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, who led the study. "We found that generic drug labels may contain incomplete or incorrect safety information. Until this problem is resolved, physicians and patients should rely on brand drug labeling only, even when the patient is getting a generic version of a drug."

Information on medication side effects are often conveyed to patients by their doctors or by pharmacists through information sheets accompanying a pharmacy purchase. These information sheets are based on the medication labels.

Safety studies are conducted by the brand name manufacturer before the medication goes on the market. The FDA does not require that the generic manufacturer duplicate these studies.

The researchers extracted drug safety data from medication labels using the Structured Product Label Information Coder and Extractor, or SPLICER, a software application created by Dr. Duke and colleagues. In a previous study, SPLICER was shown to have an accuracy of 94 percent.

"The solution to the problem of labeling inconsistency may be a centralized listing of drug side-effects, maintained independently of individual manufacturer labels. Drug labels would simply reference this common repository rather than attempting to maintain all the information within a single document. Clinicians could refer to this resource for the most up-to-date safety information regardless of generic manufacturer," Dr. Duke said.

Funding for this study was provided by the Regenstrief Institute. In addition to Dr. Duke, authors are Jeff Friedlin, D.O., formerly of the Regenstrief Institute, and Xiaochun Li, Ph.D. of the Department of Biostatistics of the IU School of Medicine.

Boehner, Obama meet amid frustration over "fiscal cliff" talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner met for an hour on Thursday as frustration mounted over the lack of progress on averting the "fiscal cliff" of steep tax increases and spending cuts.

With an end-of-year deadline looming, the two leaders came together at the White House in an attempt to rejuvenate negotiations that had become bogged down in a daily round of finger-pointing.

Earlier in the day, Boehner criticized Obama for putting jobs and the economic recovery at risk by insisting on raising tax rates for the wealthiest 2 percent.

White House spokesman Jay Carney responded by reaffirming Obama's commitment to raising the top rates and complaining there had been no movement from Republicans on that crucial topic.

"What we have not seen from the Republicans is any movement at all on the fundamental issue," Carney told reporters. "Republicans need to accept the fact that rates will go up on the top 2 percent."

Economists say failure to reach an agreement before January 1 could tip the country back into recession. The main hurdle is the expiring tax cuts, which Obama wants extended for all but the rich and Boehner wants extended for everyone.

But with positions seeming to harden, both sides also emphasized their differences on Obama's request for permanent authority to increase U.S. borrowing as part of a fiscal-cliff agreement and on Republican calls for an increase in the eligibility age for recipients of the Medicare healthcare program.

At a news conference, Boehner occasionally raised his voice in criticism of Obama's bottom-line insistence on raising tax rates on the rich.

"Raising tax rates will hurt small businesses at a time when we're expecting small businesses to be the engine of job creation in America," said Boehner, who used a chart to illustrate his point that curbing spending increases was the key to deficit reduction.

If Obama persisted on a path of higher spending and higher taxes, he said, "this chart is going to look a lot worse."

Afterward, his spokesman said Boehner would return to his home state of Ohio on Friday for the weekend, but was available if there were more talks. "Ohio has both cellphone service and airports," spokesman Michael Steel said. "It won't be a problem."

A seven-day rally in world shares came to a halt and commodity prices slipped on Thursday after negotiations over the fiscal cliff appeared to stall.

Today there's a certain sense that both sides are still apart," said Gordon "Charlop, managing director at Rosenblatt Securities in New York, describing trading as "tweaking" while investors watch Washington's back-and-forth drama.

While Republicans fumed, Obama planned to continue his public-relations offensive with a round of interviews with anchors from local television stations. He was interviewed by ABC's Barbara Walters two days ago.

A flurry of new polls showed strong support for Obama's position. According to a Wall Street Journal/NBC survey, three-quarters of Americans say they would accept raising taxes on the wealthy to avoid the cliff. Even among Republicans, some 61 percent say they would accept tax increases on high-earners.

'REALITY SHOULD SET IN'

A Pew Research Center poll showed Obama's approval rating rising and 55 percent saying he was making a serious effort to engage in the fiscal talks, while just 32 percent said Republicans were serious about a deal.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, citing the polls, said Boehner "can't ignore the people forever" on the tax issue. "At some point, reality should set in," he told reporters.

The polls have put Republicans in a difficult negotiating position, and pressure has grown on Boehner in recent weeks from the right and left. Some Republicans have expressed a willingness to give in on higher tax rates in exchange for deeper spending cuts, while conservatives have demanded that Boehner stand firm.

"I'm not concerned about my job as speaker," Boehner, who faces re-election to the leadership post in January, told reporters.

Boehner also dismissed any notion that Republicans would agree to giving Obama more authority on the debt ceiling.

"Congress is never going to give up our ability to control the purse," Boehner said. "The debt limit ought to be used to bring fiscal sanity to Washington."

A group of 72 House Democrats urged Obama to reject Republican calls to raise the Medicare eligibility age.

Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, told reporters he was told by the White House that raising the eligibility age for qualifying for Medicare benefits is not in the mix anymore.

"My understanding is that is no longer one of the items being considered by the White House," Durbin told reporters.

He said doing so "creates some serious issues for a lot of people who may be caught in the gap between retirement and eligibility. Where are they going to get health insurance? Many of them are sick people."
